How You Benefit From Proper Etiquette

My parents instilled in me to care deeply about the lessons of manners. They were completely inflexible about my saying “please'' and "thank you.” As well, I would never get away with a ‘what’ when asking someone to repeat something, I always had to answer with “pardon” or “sorry?”

What Is Etiquette?

In terms of usage, an individual who understands etiquette and puts it into practice has good manners. Etiquette can be defined as, “the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.” (Dictionary.com)

Why Etiquette Matters

Having the ability to understand and interpret the rules of etiquette for any given situation will enable you to move comfortably within society, while manners are in the domain of how one carries oneself in society. Proper etiquette will increase your comfortability in situations while boosting your confidence and competence.

From a service perspective, your ability to carry on a conversation, treat wait staff, and relate to other guests, speaks volumes about you. Having good manners is good business. Balancing the rules of etiquette and protocol are the framework of common sense when applied to the consideration of others.

How You Benefit

I  Proper etiquette will enhance your relationships in the workforce. It will enhance your status at work, and your colleagues will perceive you as more capable and professional if you understand the proper code of conduct for the workplace.

II  Proper etiquette will enhance people's impression of you. Individuals usually judge other people on how they carry themselves in social situations.

III  Proper etiquette makes communication clearer socially and professionally. Communication in the workforce will only help improve the effectiveness of any business. Both of these combined can add to the bottom line of the business.

The best description that underpins the difference between Etiquette & Manners came from columnist AA Gill in the Sunday Times in 2008. He wrote:

"It’s etiquette that points out to the girl next to you that she’s drinking from the finger bowl; it’s manners that insist you drink from yours to put her at ease.”
